New York Night Attractions: The City Lit Up

New York's landmarks work differently after dark. Some stay open late, some you can only see from the water or the air, and some are best from the far side of a river. Before you book a new york city night tour, here is each one at night, and which tours stop, pass or fly over.

Each landmark below carries the same three labels: whether it is open after dark, how the lit city shows it, and which tours bring you to it. The table at the end puts them side by side.

The Empire State Building

The Empire State Building is open into the evening, but not late into the night. Its hours are published by date range and change often. From 8 September to 4 October 2026 it opens 10am to 11pm, and the entry door closes at 10pm. Through October and early November, closing moves between 10pm and 11pm. You need a reservation for a set time.

Open after dark: Until 10 or 11pm this autumn, last entry an hour before closing. Check the date you want.
Lit up: The tower's lights change colour on a schedule the building publishes. You see the spire from the viewpoints across both rivers.
On a tour: ExperienceNYC's closed-top bus stops outside for 10 minutes. The Spanish-guided lights van ends outside about 10:30pm, with entry not included. The helicopters fly past it.

The Statue of Liberty from the water

You cannot visit the Statue of Liberty at night. The National Park Service says the island is reached only by its ferry, and no night tour lands there. What you can do is see it lit from the water or from above.

Open after dark: No. Liberty Island is a daytime visit on the park's own ferry.
Lit up: Floodlit on its pedestal. Circle Line's harbor lights cruise comes within about 100 feet.
On a tour: Every harbor cruise sails out to it, and none lands. The golden-hour cruise and the sunset cruise from Pier 16 both say so. The helicopters fly over it.

The Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge is the one landmark you can walk across at any hour. NYC DOT says the promenade is open at all times, though parts may be narrowed for works. It opened in 1883, and its main span is 1,595.5 feet.

Open after dark: Yes, at all times, on foot or by bike.
Lit up: Its towers and cables are lit, with Lower Manhattan behind them from the Brooklyn side.
On a tour: The harbor cruises pass it on the East River. The private holiday car stops for 20 minutes, and one Dyker Heights coach for 15.

One World Trade Center

The tallest tower downtown is the one you see from every cruise and every flight. One World Observatory, near the top, is open 9am to 9pm every day at 117 West Street. The observatory suggests you allow 45 minutes to an hour and book at least an hour before sunset to see the lights come on.

Open after dark: Until 9pm, most days. It closes on some dates, so check yours.
Lit up: Its spire is lit, and it anchors the Lower Manhattan skyline from the water.
On a tour: Circle Line's harbor lights cruise and the golden-hour cruise pass it. HeliNY's flight goes past Lower Manhattan and the tower.

Dumbo and the Manhattan Bridge view

Dumbo, on the Brooklyn shore, is where the skyline tours stop longest. You look across the East River at Lower Manhattan, with the Manhattan Bridge overhead. It is a public waterfront, so there is nothing to buy.

Open after dark: Yes: the streets and the waterfront are public.
Lit up: The bridge, the downtown towers and the water between them.
On a tour: The Dumbo and Queens skyline van spends about 70 minutes here. ExperienceNYC's closed-top bus stops for 20 minutes, and the Spanish-guided van for 15.

Gantry Plaza State Park in Queens

Gantry Plaza State Park sits on the East River in Long Island City, Queens. It looks straight across the river at Midtown. It is a state park, open to the public.

Open after dark: A public waterfront park; the tour stops there in the evening.
Lit up: The Midtown skyline across the water, with the river in front.
On a tour: The Dumbo and Queens skyline van spends about an hour here.

Liberty State Park and the Jersey shore

From Liberty State Park in New Jersey you see Lower Manhattan across the harbor. The Jersey shore van drives through the Holland Tunnel and spends 30 minutes here. It goes on to Empty Sky, New Jersey's 9/11 memorial.

Open after dark: A public state park; the tour stops there in the evening.
Lit up: Lower Manhattan's towers, with the Statue of Liberty out in the harbor.
On a tour: The Jersey shore van continues to Hoboken's waterfront and the Weehawken Dueling Grounds, and comes back through the Lincoln Tunnel. A private version keeps the same shore at your party's pace.

Grand Central Terminal and Rockefeller Center

Two Midtown landmarks are part of the evening rather than views of it. Grand Central Terminal is a working station, and SUMMIT One Vanderbilt's entrance is on its Main Concourse. Rockefeller Center is a public plaza, and in December it holds the Christmas tree.

On a tour: The December holiday bus spends 30 minutes inside Grand Central. The Christmas lights walk stops at the tree for 15 minutes, and the closed-top bus passes Rockefeller Center.

Questions about the landmarks at night

Is the Empire State Building open at night?

Yes, into the evening. This autumn the Empire State Building closes at 10 or 11pm depending on the date, the entry door shuts an hour earlier, and you need a timed reservation. No night tour includes a ticket; one bus stops outside for ten minutes.

Can you see the Statue of Liberty at night?

From the water or the air, yes: the harbor cruises pass close to it and the helicopters fly over it. The island itself is reached only by the park's own ferry, so no night tour lands there.
