A New York night tour can start in daylight, send you through airport-style security at a pier, or ask for your passport at an airfield. Here is the evening in order, from the light at the start to the ride home, so the New York Night guided tours you book holds no surprises.
Check the sunset for your date. In June the sun sets about 8:30pm and it is not fully dark until about 9pm. A 6pm open-top bus is back at 7:30pm, an hour before sunset. Find your date on the sunset and dark times by month.
Most night products leave at a clock time, but the dark does not. The table shows what a 6pm and an 8pm start look like through the year. The harbor cruises sold as sunset or harbor lights avoid the problem: they sail at a time set by the sunset, so you go out in the last light and come back under the lights.

One traveller put it simply: in summer, take the 8pm bus so it is dark enough. The month-by-month dark times give the sunset for every month.
A night tour either lets you out or keeps you moving. Know which one you booked, because it decides your photos and how cold you get.
TopView's open-top bus makes no stops at all: you spend the whole 90 minutes on the top deck. Big Bus begins with 10 minutes at the M&M'S store in Times Square, then stays on the road. ExperienceNYC's closed-top bus lets you out twice: 10 minutes outside the Empire State Building and 20 in Dumbo. The December holiday bus makes eight stops of 15 to 30 minutes, with guided walks inside Grand Central and on the High Line.
The skyline vans are the opposite of a bus loop. They drive you to a waterfront and let you stand there: about 70 minutes in Dumbo and an hour in Queens, or eight stops along the New Jersey shore. The Dyker Heights coaches cannot drive the display streets, so each one includes about an hour on foot among the lit houses.
The cruises leave from Manhattan piers on the Hudson and at South Street Seaport. They run to a timetable, so arrive early.

Bring photo ID. The speakeasy walk and the rooftop nightlife walk are 21 and over. You need government photo ID showing your age, which for visitors from outside the US means a passport.
Both meet at One Worldwide Plaza on 8th Avenue, and both ask for upscale casual dress. Entry to each bar is free, and you pay for your own drinks as you go.
Bring a layer even in summer. It is cooler on the water than in the streets, and the top deck of a bus catches the wind. From November, dress for standing still outside: the Dyker Heights coaches include about an hour on foot, and the skyline vans stop at the water's edge.
Most tours end where they started, but several do not. The ghost walk from Waverly Place ends at 7th Avenue and Christopher Street. The dinner walk ends at Mulberry and Canal Streets in Little Italy. The Spanish-guided van ends outside the Empire State Building, and the Dyker Heights coaches from 10th Avenue and from 7th Avenue finish at Bryant Park.
The subway runs all night. Near the Midtown starts, the E train stops at 50th Street and the A and E at 42nd Street-Port Authority at all hours. After a flight you come back to the airfield, so plan the train or taxi back from New Jersey before you go. The meeting-points map lists the station beside every start.
