The cheapest evening on the water is Circle Line's sunset cruise from Pier 16, at $27 per person. It has an app audio guide rather than a live one, so bring headphones. Sunset in Manhattan moves by four hours through the year: from about 4:28pm in the first week of December to 8:31pm at the end of June. Most night products leave at a fixed clock time, so the same booking is a different evening in each month. The table shows which ones move with the sun.

The rule is simple. From November to mid-February, anything that leaves after 6pm starts in the dark. From May to August, book the later departure, or a cruise timed to the sunset. The month-by-month dark times give you the exact sunset for your dates.
Nothing starts at a single front door. You will meet at a pier, a Midtown kerb, a street corner downtown, or an airfield in New Jersey. Check the start on your booking before you plan the rest of the evening.

Access varies more by ride than by operator. Here is what the listings say.
Weather decides the open-air rides. Cruises, buses and walks run rain or shine, but an open top deck in the rain is a long 90 minutes. Flights and some vans may be cancelled for bad weather; then the operator offers you a new date or a full refund. On a wet night, a closed-top bus from the night bus tours keeps you dry.
If rain is forecast, choose a closed-top bus or a cruise with a heated cabin. You keep the view through the glass, and you can still step out on deck when it clears.
