What a Manhattan night tour on foot is
It is an evening at walking pace with a guide who knows the streets. You meet on a corner, walk
for two or three hours, and stop in front of houses, bars and doorways to hear what happened
there. No vehicle is involved, so you see far less of the skyline and far more of the city at
street level.
The walks fall into three kinds. The Greenwich Village ghost walks start in the evening and
end in the dark for most of the year. The bar walks take over-21s into three venues or more in
Midtown and Hell's Kitchen. And from late November the Christmas lights walk strings together
the shop windows, Bryant Park and the tree. The mafia dinner walk and the gangsters and
ghosts walk publish no start time, so book them for the stories.
Why choose a Manhattan night tour on foot
You go where no bus can
Village side streets, a speakeasy, the doorway where a story happened: a guide on foot
leads you into places a bus drives past.
The group is small
The haunted walk takes 13 at most and the Christmas lights walk 12. You can hear the guide at
every stop and ask your question.
The fare is low
The ghost walks cost $35 to $39 a person, less than most cruises. The bar walks
are $38 to $40 before drinks.
Wheelchair users are welcome on some

- Budget: $34 to $129 a person. The dinner walk is the dearest because the
meal is in it.
- Where: the haunted walk meets at the south-west corner of Washington Square
Park, the 8pm walk on 6th Avenue at Waverly Place, the bar walks on 8th Avenue at 49th Street,

- When: an 8pm start is dark from October to March and light until about
9pm in June; see the sunset and dark times by month.
- What to bring: shoes for two hours on pavement, a layer, and photo ID for
the bar walks.
- Booking: every walk here refunds in full up to 24 hours ahead, but a
latecomer to the 8pm walk may not catch up and gets no refund.

Who should choose something else
- If walking for two hours is hard. The haunted walk and the dinner walk both
say so. The night bus tours give you the lights from a seat.
- If you are under 21. The bar walks need photo ID proving you are 21, and the
ghost walk takes under-18s only with an adult of 21 or over. The gangsters walk calls itself
family-friendly, and children six and under go free.
- If you want the skyline. A walk in the Village sees very little of it. The
skyline night tours take you across the river for the view.
- If flashing lights bother you. The Christmas walk passes window light shows
and asks you to skip it.

Do the walking tours run in the rain?
The 8pm ghost walk goes ahead rain or shine and offers a new date or a refund only if the weather is too severe to walk. Bring an umbrella and shoes that grip on wet stone.

Pier 83, the open-top buses (Big Bus lists a lift), some of the helicopter flights, the Greenwich Village walks and the mafia dinner walk. Most vans, coaches and the closed-top buses say they are not suitable.
Can I cancel a New York night tour?
Almost every tour refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before it starts. The private night flight by plane is non-refundable, and its card says so. Operators may also cancel for bad weather or too few bookings, then offer a new date or a full refund.
