What's Open After Dark: New York Night Hours for Decks, Bridges and Parks

Much of a new york city night tour is free and open late: the bridges, the harbor ferry and the waterfront parks. The observation decks close between 9pm and midnight, no evening tour lands on the statue's island, and a few places change their hours with the season. Here is what is open when, and which parts need a tour.

What is open after dark, at a glance?

The table sets out each place, how late it stays open, the one thing to know, and which tours take you there. Hours change, so check the date you go.

Is the Empire State Building open at night?

Yes, into the evening. The Empire State Building publishes its hours by date range, and this autumn it closes at 10pm or 11pm, with the entry door shutting an hour before closing. You need a reservation for a specific time.

No tour includes a ticket. The closed-top bus stops outside for ten minutes, and the Spanish-guided van ends outside at about 10:30pm. The tower's lights change colour on a schedule of their own, night by night.

How late is Top of the Rock open?

Until midnight. Top of the Rock opens daily from 8am to midnight, with last entry at 11:10pm, according to its own site in April 2026. You can stay on the decks as long as you like, and most people spend 45 minutes to an hour. It sits above Rockefeller Center at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.

Which deck stays open latest?

Top of the Rock and SUMMIT One Vanderbilt both run to midnight, with last entry at 11:10pm and 10:30pm. The Empire State Building follows at 10pm or 11pm. One World Observatory, open 9am to 9pm, closes first and is the one to visit for the sunset itself: it suggests a ticket at least an hour before sunset, and a visit of 45 minutes to an hour.

In June the sun sets at 8:29pm, so a 9pm closing leaves you little of the dark. In December the sun sets at 4:28pm, and every deck is open for hours after it.

Do you need to book a deck ahead?

For the Empire State Building, yes: every visit needs a reservation for a set time, made when you buy. Top of the Rock sells timed tickets too, and if your plans change it will reissue yours for another date when you contact it 24 hours ahead, or for a later time if poor weather or visibility spoils the view. At One World Observatory you can buy online or at the box office at West and Vesey Streets, inside the main entrance.

At sunset the decks are at their busiest, so book the slot you want rather than turning up. For the lights alone, a later slot is easier to get, and the dark lasts until closing.

What closes before the evening tours start?

A few things you might plan to pair with a tour. One World Observatory closes at 9pm, so after a summer sunset cruise there is no time left for it. The High Line closes at 8pm from December to March, before most of the walks begin. Little Island's closing hour moves with the season. And no evening tour lands on the statue's island.

Put the thing that closes first at the start of your evening, and the tour after it.

Can you visit the Statue of Liberty at night?

Not on a tour. The statue is reached only by the park's own ferry, which you need a ticket to board, from the Battery or from Liberty State Park in New Jersey. No evening tour lands on the island.

You can still see it lit. The park says the torch, a copper flame gilded in gold, is lit by floodlights at night. Circle Line's Harbor Lights cruise passes within about 100 feet of it, and the helicopters fly past it; our night boat tours page lists every sailing.

Is the Brooklyn Bridge open at night?

Yes. The city says the Brooklyn Bridge promenade is open at all times, though parts of the walkway may be narrowed. It is one of the few great sights you can walk at midnight for nothing.

The buses cross the Manhattan Bridge instead and stop in Dumbo for the view back. In the Christmas season, one Dyker Heights coach stops for 15 minutes at the bridge, and the private holiday car for 20.

Does the free ferry run all night?

Yes. The Staten Island Ferry is free and runs every day and all night. Through the evening a boat leaves Whitehall at least every 30 minutes, and every 30 minutes through the small hours. The crossing takes about 25 minutes each way, with downtown lit behind you.

Are the High Line and Little Island open after dark?

The High Line is, until a set hour. It opens at 7am and closes at 10pm from April to November, and at 8pm from December to March. The December holiday bus includes a walk on it, so in winter that stop comes before eight.

Little Island opens daily at 6am, and its closing hour changes with the season, so check it on the day. NY Waterway's golden hour cruise passes it on the Hudson.

Is Times Square open all night?

It never closes, because it is a street: a public square on Broadway and 7th Avenue between 42nd and 47th Streets, run by the Times Square Alliance from 1560 Broadway. The open-top buses and the closed-top bus start within a few blocks of it.

What about Grand Central and Rockefeller Center?

The December holiday bus spends 30 minutes inside Grand Central Terminal with its guide, and stops at Rockefeller Center. In the Christmas season, the Fifth Avenue lights walk stops for 15 minutes at the tree.

In 2025 the tree was lit on 3 December and stayed on view until mid-January. The classic street view is from Fifth Avenue, looking west.

Where is the best free view of the skyline?

Across the rivers. Dumbo in Brooklyn looks at Lower Manhattan through the bridges. Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City faces Midtown across the East River. Liberty State Park looks at downtown from New Jersey.

Can you do it all without a tour?

Much of it. You can walk the bridge, ride the ferry, stand in Times Square and go up a deck on your own.
